Book display
Mickelsen Library and Army MWR team up with the American Girl book series starting today until June 30. Authorized Army MWR patrons ages 6 to 6 are invited to visit Mickelsen Library, Bldg. 2, to check out the Kit Kittredge book display and to learn about how they can win a $1,000 shopping spree at an American Girl store location or a set of Kit Kittredge: An American Girl books. Super Saturday
Logan SAS will change their hours of operation starting Friday. New hours are from 3 to 10 p.m. During summer full-day camp months of June, July and August, Saturday openings will be limited to pay-day weekends: June 14; July 19; and Aug 2 and 16. The free Saturday program includes dinner and an evening snack. The program is open to CYS registered school-age children with an active SAS pass and requires reservations. Community service and long-term projects will be the focus in programming. Other choices and more field trips will be offered to engage and explore children’s interests during new opening hours. CYS tee ball and baseball
CYS Sports is accepting enrollments now through Friday for the tee ball, coach pitch baseball and regular baseball season.
Age groups are as follows:
• Tee ball: 4-year-olds
• Tee ball: 5- and 6-year-olds
• Coach pitch: 7- and 8-year-olds
• Regular baseball: 9- to 15-year-olds
The cost is $40 for one child and $35 for each additional child. The season starts at the end of May and runs through the first week in July. Freedom Camp
A three-day camp is planned for children, ages 7 to 18, of Soldiers who are currently deployed or have returned from deployment within the last seven months. The deadline to register is June 6. The camp is being held June 19 through 21. Registration packets and instructions may be downloaded from www.blissmwr.com/freedomcamp/ or picked up at CYS central registration. SAT/ACT/PSAT prep
Child and Youth Services is offering a class to help prepare college-bound students. The class will be offered May 3 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the YouthPlex, Bldg. 195 on Chaffee Road. Students must pre-register through Central Enrollment and Registration, Bldg. 1743 on Victory Road, adjacent to the Fort Bliss Inn. There is a $5 registration fee. Red Cross volunteers
The American Red Cross at William Beaumont Army Medical Center is sponsoring a summer volunteer program for ages 13 to 17. The program is scheduled for June 2 to Aug. 15. If interested in becoming a volunteer, complete a registration packet. Packets can be picked up in room 4K2, Bradley Building, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Once the packet is returned, a reservation for orientation can be made for May 28 or June 10, 16 or 18. Youth leadership training
The Fort Bliss Army Volunteer Corps and YESS will be hosting leadership training for youth in ninth through 12th grades June 12 and 13 at GMH Military Housing, 1991 Marshall Road. The leadership training will be based on Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute. Applications can be retrieved from ACS, Bldg. 2494, Ricker Road, or www.blissmwr.com. Pre-K programs
Fort Bliss Child and Youth Services offer Pre-K programs at both the Main Child Development Center and the Logan CDC. The curriculum encompasses all the Texas Education Agency Pre-K guidelines, as well as specific objectives and benchmarks given by the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. Families with 4-year-old children already enrolled full-time at CYS can participate in this program without any additional cost.
Family discounts
Fee reductions for family members of deceased or severely disabled Soldiers who served in OIF, OEF and other mission-related contingencies are available. All patrons eligible to use Army Child and Youth Services will receive registration and re-registration at no cost. Discounts have changed for family members of sponsors who are deployed; on an unaccompanied PCS, a TCS or a TDY; part of rear detachment; wounded warriors; and fallen warriors. A copy of enrollment in the Army Disabled Soldier Support System should be provided to CER, Bldg. 1743.
After-school pickup
The Fort Bliss Middle School and Teen Center program offers to pick up children who are involved in tutoring and extra-curricular activities from Ross and Basset middle schools at 5:30 p.m. Parties interested in this service need to sign up their children at the center.
SKIES Unlimited
SKIES offers a variety of programs of interest to children and teens. Classes include dance, martial arts, fashion modeling, academic tutoring and more. Participants must register with Central Registration and payment is due at registration. Registration opens from the 20th of the month prior to the 7th of the month for which you are enrolling. Classes must have at least five participants to take place; if not, the class will be cancelled and refunded money will be placed on a household account. For information, call 569-7732.
