Sports camp
Fort Bliss CYS presents the first Greg Foster/Hero Sports Camp. This basketball camp is open to children ages 8 to 14 and will be held June 23 through 26 from 8 a.m. to noon. The cost is $25 and will cover all four days of camp. Greg Foster is a former basketball player for the University of Texas at El Paso and was also a member of the 2001 Los Angeles Lakers NBA championship team. Camp is limited to the first 120 children and will feature an autograph session with Greg Foster and friends. You may register at any CYS facility. Super Saturdays
Logan SAS has changed their hours of operation. New hours are from 3 to 10 p.m. During our summer full-day camp months of June, July and August, Saturday openings will be limited to payday weekends: June 14, July 19, and Aug. 2 and 16. This free Saturday program includes a nutritious dinner and evening snack and is open to CYS registered school-age children with an active SAS pass. The program requires reservations to hold down costs associated with staffing. Community service and long-term projects will be the focus in programming; however, many other choices and more field trips will be offered to engage and explore children’s interests during operating hours. Co-ed tackle football
Registration for age groups 8 to 9 and 10 to 11 will continue through June 20 for the tackle football season. Youth must be registered with Fort Bliss CYS and have a current sports physical on file by June 27. Cost is $60 for the first child and $55 for each additional child. Since this is a competitive league, the 50 percent participation rule is not in effect. Parents, please note you must attend sportsmanship class before your child is able to participate in the city league. The class fee will be $5 and the time a date of the class is yet to be determined. For more information call the youth sports department at 568-2671.

Summer reading program
Join the Mickelsen Community Library’s Summer Reading Program, “Catch a Dragon by the Tale,” for children between the ages of 2 and 12. Registration for the program begins Saturday and continues through July 19. Reading begins June 3 and continues through Aug. 2. Children will come to the library and check out books they would like to read. The library will keep a log of the read books after the books are returned. Throughout the summer, the library will have various contests and incentives pertaining to dragons, knights and princesses. Youth leadership training
The Fort Bliss Army Volunteer Corps and YESS will be hosting leadership training for youth in ninth through 12th grades June 12 and 13 at Balfour Beatty Communities (formerly known as GMH Military Housing), 1991 Marshall Road. The leadership training will be based on Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute. Applications can be retrieved from ACS, Bldg. 2494, Ricker Road, or www.blissmwr.com. Freedom Camp
Experience “a day in the life” of a Soldier at Freedom Camp 2008, which is planned for children ages 7 to 18, of Soldiers who are currently deployed, have returned from deployment within the last seven months, or will deploy within the next seven months. For teens ages 13 to 18, this is a three-day overnight camp from 8 a.m. June 19 through 5 p.m. June 21. Pre-teens ages 7 to 12 will experience day camp activities from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 20 and 21. Deadline to register is June 6.
