With a flurry of cannon fire, flag-waving and somber memories, Fort Bliss commenced its celebration of 232 years of American independence with its annual Salute to the Union ceremony Wednesday at Memorial Circle. Despite the heat and humidity, Soldiers, veterans and civilians gathered to celebrate the Fourth of July two days early.
The event was opened with the posting of the colors and a rendition of the national anthem by Felicia Mitchell. Fifty cannon rounds were fired from four PAC-75 Howitzers during the “Roll Call of the States” as a salute to every state that entered the Union. The firing unit was the 229th Field Artillery Regiment.
Maj. Gen. Howard Bromberg, Fort Bliss commanding general, thanked those who attended the ceremony and provided this year’s remarks.
