A one-stroke victory for the winning team and a prize-winning hole-in-one were a few of the highlights from a fundraising golf tournament Friday at Underwood’s Sunrise Course, hosted by the 2nd Combined Arms Battalion.
The scramble-format tournament included 22 teams who arrived early for an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Teammates Randy Alfredo, Elliott Rogers, Albert Martinez and Terrel Porter shot a stellar 18-under-par 54, edging out another team by a single stroke.
Maurice Phinney, the operations sergeant major for 2nd CAB, said the competitive aspect of the tournament is not nearly as important as boosting morale within the unit, getting Soldiers out and involved with El Pasoans and raising money for a good cause.
“It’s all about the Soldiers in the community having a good time,” said Phinney. “The whole intent is to have the Soldiers and the people of El Paso coming together to show our appreciation for what they do for us.”
On the third hole, a par-3 of 139 yards, Greg Davis, a Soldier with D Co., 2nd CAB, approached the tee and took his swing. After his three teammates teed off, the quartet made their way to the green to putt for a birdie – a putt they didn’t have to attempt, as it turned out.
“It was kind of strange how it happened,” said Davis. “I hit my ball and we lost it in the clouds. When I walked up to the green, I saw that my ball was in the hole. It was great.”
Davis’ shot, along with his team’s commendable performance, placed them among the top four finishers, and the hole-in-one earned Davis an electronics prize package from a local sponsor.
Food was provided to all the participants afterward and hundreds of dollars’ worth of prizes were raffled off, including gift certificates, golf equipment, airline ticket vouchers and MP3 players.
